Gomez Peak Trail

Hiking East of Silver City

Dragonfly Trail

This 3.4-mile loop near Arenas Valley, New Mexico, is an easy trail taking about 1 hour and 12 minutes to complete. Popular for birding, hiking, and mountain biking, it offers solitude at quieter times and is open year-round. Dogs are welcome on a leash.

The area has multiple trails, with maps available from the Gila National Forest. Follow the well-marked 3.5-mile Dragonfly Loop by taking the right fork about 200 yards in. Midway, petroglyphs can be found near a sign with an arrow. Arenas Valley Road loops back to US 180 toward Silver City.

Cooks Peak Trail

Jack’s Peak

Explore this 8.4-mile out-and-back trail near Silver City, New Mexico. Typically rated as moderately challenging, it takes around 4 hours and 15 minutes to complete. Ideal for backpacking, camping, and hiking, this trail offers a peaceful experience with minimal crowds. The best time to visit is from September to May. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash.

Hiking Northwest of Silver City

Catwalk Trail

This amazing trail is worth the drive from Silver City to Glenwood, NM. The Catwalk Recreation Area is a great area to discover the history of mining in the Mogollon Mountains above Whitewater Canyon. The trail over Whitewater Creek uses bridges and catwalks, which makes it a very memorable experience.

Very popular year round.
